Major push to grow eSports, startups in Orlando in 2019

Since the debut of Full Sail University’s “The Fortress,” an 11,200-square-foot esports-specific arena, there has been a push by city leaders, business groups, universities and high-profile businesses to promote Central Florida as a competitive video gaming hub.
 
Regional leaders believe that Orlando’s traditional tourism industry will play a large role in helping lure more high-profile esports events in the area.
 
Jason Siegel, CEO of the Greater Orlando Sports Commission, said Central Florida leaders plan to bid on video game tournaments the same way they have done for past events like the NFL’s Pro Bowl and the NBA All-Star Game. The committee leading this effort is investigating how to expand esports events. “As a committee, we want to identify all of the competitive advantages Orlando has in this space,” said Siegel.
